Lot 882

1909-S Lincoln 1C. VDB PCGS MS66 RD. PCGS graded MS-66 Red. Well struck with lots of red color. This is the first year of issue for the Lincoln cent, and it is interesting to note that this design was adopted to commemorate the 100th year of Lincoln's birth in 1809. Designed by Victor David Brenner h placed his small initials at the base of the reverse, but the powers that be didn't like such a display or such a bold signature appearing on every cent. The V.D.B. initials were ordered removed, but the coins released continued to circulate. While large numbers of Philadelphia Mint coins are available, only 484,000 San Francisco pieces were struck, making this issue the lowest mintage to date for this series. Finding a stellar Gem like this is quite an accomplishment for the advanced collector. Pop 204; 30 finer, 16 in 66+, 14 in 67. (PCGS # 2428) Estimated Value $7,000 - 7,500
