Neatly Crafted Inro with Fish Motif. Japan, probably Meiji Period, c. late 19th century. The inro, a little multi-tiered box, was in essence an external "pocket" that was tied to the ancient and venerable (and pocketless) garment of old Japan, the kimono. This one, built up from layers and layers of black lacquer, consists of two oval stackable boxes and a lid -- the lower box divided into two. Each side with a finely painted traditional Japanese motif in red, gray-brown, and gold: one with a large carp in leaf-lined basket; the other a sprig of branch with fruit, leaves, and berries. Accoutrements to the inro are the ojime, a segmented bead in ivory to cinch the box shut; and the netsuke, a carved ivory square with radiating ribbing, which held the box to the garment. The inro with some age cracks and a repair. The ivories all very fine, with choice golden patina from use and age. Inro height: 2-1/2". A pleasing example of this Japanese art form. The fish rendering alone, makes this one a catch!
Estimated Value $250 - 300.
