Hand-Painted Stamp Box. Wood stamp box, 3¾ x 2½ x 1", late 19th century. Japanese-influenced black and gold lacquer work on the sides and bottom of the box is in very good condition, with scattered scratches throughout and minor wear at the corners (as one would expect). The box is distinguished by a beautiful hand-painted oil portrait on the lid. The expected crazing, some noticeable wear at the corners and a small scratch at the back of our subject's head do not detract from the beauty of the piece. Overall, very good condition.

The lovely, dark-haired woman in the portrait is seated, with a small mirror in her hand. Garbed in white and green, with fresh flowers in her hair, there is a serene, thoughtful expression on the face of the sitter. The gown and hair style pictured indicate a mid-19th century date, while the lacquer work points to slightly later manufacture. Regardless of time period, this is a lovely piece of 19th century craftsmanship, in a format that is seldom seen in such good condition.
Estimated Value $300 - 400.
