Lot 845

Another Fine Case, with an Exotic Depiction of an Elephant. Russia, c. 1900-1915. The case is a narrow rectangle, with rounded edges and corners, and spring button catch. The elephant stands free, facing left. The creature stands on trampled ground, its shelter in shambles about its feet, while its restraining chain lies loose and away from it. Hallmarks are: oval with classical female head right, and 84. Maker's marks, SL1, within narrow oval. The button catch set with an "amethyst," in handsome violet glass. On the under side of the case, at the corner, two conjoined initials in gold have been attached -- "CA" in an arabesque of sinuous foliate forms. Size: 4-1/2 x 3-1/2 x 5/8." In choice condition, with very handsome toning to the scene on the lid. Excellent work, and something different for the jaded eye!
Estimated Value $425 - 500.
