Lot 83

1846 N-11 R1 Medium Date PCGS graded MS62 Red & Brown. Frosty bright mint red mellowing to light steel brown on the devices, about half the mint color remaining. The notable marks are a rather large spot of darker toning (not carbon) on the neck, a few additional small spots of similar toning on both sides, and a collection of microscopic ticks on the neck, jaw, and in the field before the chin. Only the spot on the neck catches your eye. Nicely struck E-MDS, die state a. Fine diagonal die lines show below the entire date and the fields are just starting to show fine flowlines from the dentil tips. Our grade is MS62, CC#6 in the Grellman census. An important cent, one of the "reddest" examples known of this popular "Redbook" variety. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 3 finer in 64RB. Estimated Value $900 - UP
Ex Stack's 6/20/1985:443-Colonel Steven K. Ellsworth Collection (lot ticket included).
