Lot 818

Scotland. Silver Ryal, or Sword Dollar, 1570. S-5472; Dav-8463. James VI, 1567-1625. Crowned arms between I-R. Reverse: Crowned sword separating hand, date and value ("XXX" to right, standing for 30 Shillings). This type coined before the king's accession to the English throne, therefore a purely Scottish issue. And here is one of the finest examples obtainable: Good EF in English terms, superbly toned in shades of mauve and rich bluish gray, with a needle-sharp strike, on a clearly superior flan of fine metal and nearly fully round, without cracks or damage, therefore truly exceptional. A prize for any collection. Very rare in this outstanding state of preservation. NGC graded MS-62.

The cataloguer has described dozens of these over the years for auctions, and never seen a finer piece.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 6,000.

Realized $9,775
