Lot 794

1862-S $2.50 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-61. A well struck and strictly uncirculated example with warm rich golden color. The lustrous surfaces are somewhat prooflike which gives this little treasure plenty of "flash." This remarkable example will certainly leave a lasting impression in the memories of date collectors of this series. San Francisco mint quarter eagles from the Civil War era and before are quite rare in grades above Extremely Fine. They are so elusive in fact, that it can be years between offerings. This denomination was not used in large bullion transactions, such as were $20 pieces and therefore saw extensive use in everyday commerce. PCGS reports 2 at this level with only 1 better by a point. NGC reports no examples in Mint State (PCGS # 7798) .
Estimated Value $14,000 - 16,000.
