In Clay County, Indiana. Some time before 1866, a man by the name of Thorpe moved a house from Harmony three miles west down the Cumberland Highway to what is now the site of Brazil, Indiana. When there were four property owners, Mr. Thorpe, Hipplehauser, and "Yankee" Bill (William) Stewart were asked to choose a name for the area. Yankee Bill suggested the name Brazil because Brazil, South America was much talked about at the time.
