Original Vintage Photo of "The Pride of Detroit" -- 1927 Stinson SM-1 Detroiter Monoplane--Starting Around the World Flight. Original vintage 8 x 10" photo of William S. Brock and Detroit businessman Edward F. Schlee surrounded by crowds at Curtiss Field, L.I., the first stop of their projected around-the-world trip in 1927. Starting from Harbour Grace, Canada, they flew east for 12,295 miles until they hit a typhoon at Tokyo, Japan, and were convinced by worried telegrams from family and friends to end the attempt. They returned to the United States by ship and were still celebrated as heroes. Photo by International Newsreel Corp, with newspaper snip present.
