Saint-Pierre, Jacques-Henri Bernadin De. Paul Et Virginie. (1737-1814) French author and botanist who became friends with and a pupil of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Together they studied the plants in and around Paris and part of the Enlightenment era movement. His most notable work was "Paul Et Virginie" first published in 1788. This edition was published in 1856 in Paris by Furn, Libraire-Éditeur and boasts an incredible gilt gold and colors pressed leather cover. "Paul Et Virginie was an immensely popular book The novel's title characters are friends since birth who fall in love. The story is set on the island of Mauritius under French rule, then named Île de France. Written on the eve of the French Revolution, and tells the fate of a child of nature corrupted by the artificial sentimentality of the French upper classes in the late eighteenth century. Book is in very good condition with gilt edged pages in overall fine condition, the pages clean with scores of beautiful engravings, a simple book plate on inside front cover, wear to the spine and soft corner to boards. Book is now housed in a clamshell box from another publication to maintain its integrity. Very scarce. Estimated Value $500 - 900
