Lot 732

1847/7 N-2 R3 Large 7 over Small 7. ANACS graded MS-64 Brown. Frosty medium brown and light chocolate with traces of light bluish steel overtone in protected areas on the reverse. Sharply struck and the only marks are a spot of fine carbon in the dentils above the M in AMERICA and a less obvious one in the dentils over the F in OF plus a thin diagonal nick right of the base of E in ONE. E-MDS, die state a. Fine die lines extend from the dentils toward star 13 and the reverse is uncracked. The "Small 7" shows clearly above the top of the normal 7. In reality, the entire date was repunched with the center of rotation around the 8. Repunching is clearly visible on the 1, 4, and 7, and both 7's were from the same punch. The upper 7 just appears smaller because it was lightly impressed into the die before the date position was adjusted. But the "Large 7 over Small 7" name has stuck. Regardless of the label we use, this is an important piece for the collector of higher grade "Redbook" varieties. Our grade is MS60, tied for CC#5 honors in the Grellman census. The attribution and "LG 7/SM 7" feature are noted on the ANACS label.
Estimated Value $750-UP.
