Lot 69

1816 N-9 R3 NGC graded MS64 Brown. Choice frosty medium steel brown. Satiny mint luster covers this cent and the eye appeal is very nice. No spots or stains. The only notable marks are two tiny ticks on the cheek, a faint diagonal hairline on the cheek, and a microscopic pin prick near the curl on the lower part of the neck. M-LDS. Traces of repunching remain visible on the 81 in the date and there is a subtle wave in the field above the back of the head. Graded MS60 net AU55 and tied for CC#4 in the Noyes census, his photo #27520. Our grade is AU58+, very close to mint state, and the cent has choice mint state eye appeal. Once housed in a PCGS slab graded MS63BN (old green PCGS label #1591.63/7422172). The attribution and Mervis Collection provenance are noted on the NGC label. Pop 1; the finest example graded at both services for the variety. Estimated Value $2,000 - UP
Ex John J. Nicholas, Superior 2/2/1992:490-Chris McCawley-Adam Mervis, Heritage Auctions 1/10/2014:2011-Chuck Hall Collection (includes the Nicholas collection envelope and both lot tickets).
