Lot 689

1799/8 S-188 R4. PCGS graded VF-25. Overdate 9 over 8. Sharpness near VF30 but there are a few too many light contact marks for that sharpness grade. These include a fine pinscratch across the upper hair into the field right of the Y in LIBERTY, myriad faint hairline scratches on the face and bust, and a dull pinprick or small dig in the field just right of the date. All the contact marks are very old and blend perfectly into the attractive glossy chocolate and medium brown toning. No roughness or verdigris, but there is a shallow planchet flake at the right top of the first T in STATES, as struck. MDS, Breen state III, with clear die clashmarks from the opposing dentils over RIC in AMERICA. Struck very slightly off center to K-4.5 leaving some of the obverse dentils off the planchet. The date and overdate feature are complete and bold, and the legends are strong. A premium example of this classic rarity in the large cent series. Our grade is net VF20. The Eliasberg provenance is noted on the old green PCGS label. PCGS population 6 with 3 finer.
Estimated Value $25,000-UP.
Ex William Cutler Atwater, B. Max Mehl 6/11/1946:25-Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., Bowers & Merena 5/209/96:509.
