Lot 683

1943-S Jefferson Nickel struck on a Fiji/Australia Sixpence Planchet! NGC graded AU-58. A delightful error which is possibly unique, or certainly extremely rare at least. The smaller planchet was fed into the coining press and this dies produced a fairly normal looking Jefferson nickel, however, the right side shows only a fraction of the lettering and base of the digits in the date (enough so to identify this as a 1943). On the reverse, the large "S" over Monticello confirms this is a wartime issue. Somewhat softly struck on the steps and upper curls as this thinner planchet simply didn't have enough metal between the dies to fill in all the high points. Apparently this one circulated briefly before being saved, but is still very lustrous and appealing. A foremost rarity for the error specialist, and while not as well known as the 1943 copper Lincoln cents, is no doubt rarer and struck during the same time period and circumstances. The error is noted on the NGC insert, and currently in holder #1270632-004.
Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,500.
