Rare Complete 375 Million Year Old Rhenocystis Carpoid. Carpoids are extinct members of the echinoderm phylum of which starfish and sea urchins are members. Rhenocystis latipunculata is known as the mitrate carpois as its shape somewhat resembles a bishop's mitre. A Carpoid's body consisted of calcite plates and a segmented spiny tail along with two feeding appendages extending from its head. This complete 375 million year old 1.3 inch Rhinocystis is centered on a 5 ½ X 4 ½ black slate slab and is from the world famous Hunsruck shale in Bundenbach, Germany. The Bundenback fossils are extraordinary in the they preserve even soft body detail because of their rapid burial and pytitization. The quarries are no longer open so that the only fossils available are from old time collections. Estimated Value $300 - UP

Realized $175
