Jefferson, Thomas -- Land Grant Countersigned by James Madison (1743-1826) Primary author of the Declaration of Independence; third President of the United States (1801-1809). Partly-printed document signed "Th:Jefferson" as President, one page, vellum, 8¼ x 15", Washington, Oct. 23, 1807. Countersigned by James Madison as Secretary of State. Granting a quarter lot of land at Steubenville, "in the Territory north-west of the Ohio, and above the mouth of Kentucky river" to Horton Howard of Belmont County, Ohio. Jefferson's signature is light but legible; Madison's is somewhat darker. Very good condition; vellum is toned, with some creasing and a small edge splits at lower edge, not affecting signatures. Attractively matted and framed to an overall size of 14¼ x 20¾". Estimate $3,000 - 4,000
