Phillip III of Spain (1578 -1621) King of Spain (1578-1621). Considered to be a congenial and pious ruler, Philip's political reputation abroad has been largely negative; he has been criticized as an "indistinguished and insignificant man," a "miserable monarch," whose "only virtue appeared to reside in a total absence of vice." Manuscript letter signed ("Yo El Rey") as King, on vellum, 1 page, 7½ x 8 in., Madrid, March 1, 1608. In Spanish. To the Archbishop of Granada. A letter of thanks and request for the Archbishop to bring books for the King's review: "I beg of you affectionately to bring about the qualification of the said book as soon as possible…and that you will bring this book and any other books that you might have of this quality when you come here." Strong bold signature. Seal affixed verso. Diagonal paper loss across lower bottom portion of page does not affect the signature or text. Overall in very good condition.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,200.

Realized $600
