Pico, Pio de Jesus - Last Mexican Governor of Alta California (1801-1894) Californio rancher and politician of African, Indian, and Spanish ancestry, the last governor of Alta California under Mexican rule. He served from 1845 to 1846, just before the U.S. military occupation. Autograph letter signed "Pio Pico," one page, on ruled 10 x 7¾" paper, Los Angeles, Dec. 12, 1871. To his nephew, Jose Maria, in Spanish, telling him to ask for the money to pay the taxes, to see if he can sign for his uncle for another sum, and to see if he can collect what he is sending him. He sends greetings to his sister and says that he is leaving for San Bernardino. Normal folds and a small spot, else fine. With English translation. Housed in a moss-green holder with marbled boards. Pico Blvd. in Los Angeles is a major thoroughfare and the name "Pico" can be seen numerous places in southern California. Estimate Value $250 - UP
