Lot 593

1803 S-261 R2 Small Date, Large Fraction, Double Struck NGC graded XF40. Attractive frosty medium chocolate brown and steel. Smooth and free of any trace of corrosion or verdigris. Only a few minor contact marks, including a dull diagonal nick under the chin that can help identify this cent. MDS Breen state IV, with buckling at the lowest curls in addition to the earlier die crack that arcs from the rim under the date through the shoulder, hair, and lower end of the hair ribbon to the dentils off to the left. This cent was struck two times, both strikes reasonably well centered on the planchet. The second strike was against the reverse die with a 15 degree CW rotation between the impressions, but the obverse was struck against a new blank planchet during the second impression (thereby creating an obverse brockage impression on the second planchet). Sharp doubling shows on all the devices on the reverse while the obverse displays the characteristic wavy swelling that is associated with having been struck against a blank planchet. In addition the blank planchet was positioned slightly off center and left behind a depression along the dentil tips over LIBERTY. A beautiful example of a new mint error. Our grade is VF20. The "Mint Error" and "Double Struck with Reverse Rotation" features are on the NGC label along with the attribution and Mervis provenance.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.
