Lot 576

1873 Shield Nickel. Closed 3. PCGS graded MS-64. Here is a truly rare coin that is not fully appreciated by the collecting public. In a recent PCGS Population Report, we note that 3 have been graded this high, with none graded higher! Further, only 3 others have been graded below it, all MS-63 in uncirculated grades. The closed 3 date punches were replaced in early January 1873 after it was determined that the closed 3 could easily be mistaken for an 8. Hence, new date punches were prepared for nearly all denominations, and new dies were pressed into service. Hence, few closed 3 coins were produced, and this Shield nickel is an excellent example for the collector who appreciates such things. Frosty luster and well struck, the surfaces are problem free.
Estimated Value $250 - 300.

Realized $719
