Lot 548

1798 S-169 R3 Style II Hair, Small 8. NGC graded MS-61 Brown. Glossy medium brown with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints and frosty luster showing in protected areas on both sides. The only marks are a several dozen small spots of darker olive and steel toning on both sides, and these do catch your eye (what C. Douglas Smith called the "Speckled Trout Effect"). Otherwise this piece is choice. The best identifying mark is a tiny diagonal nick right of the base of the 7 in the date. M-LDS, Breen state IV. Bulges near the dentils tips extend from above LIBERTY clockwise to the rim opposite the chin. The repunching on RICA is clear. This cent was graded MS60 by Doug Smith. He acquired it from Dr. Shalowitz in 1987 for $3000 cash, 3 MS 1818 Cents, and 3 MS 1819 Cents (total cost to Doug $6500). The complete story is described in notes inside Doug's collection envelopes, which are included. Called AU55 and CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says AU55 net EF45 and tied for CC#2, his photo #23142. Our grade is AU58 net AU50. The attribution is noted on the NGC label. NGC population 1; none finer. The only example graded MS at NGC for the variety, and the second finest grades only VF.
Estimated Value $6,500-UP.
