Lot 538

1807 S-271 R1 Comet Obverse VF20+. Sharpness VF35 with extremely fine porosity under an attractive chocolate brown patina. The highpoints are a slightly lighter shade of brown and this piece offers nice eye appeal in spite of the imperfect surfaces. No verdigris and only a few minor contact marks. The notable marks are a tiny pinprick between the feet of the R & T in LIBERTY and a light scratch hidden in the hair under that R. Both sides are covered with an extremely thin layer of lacquer or some similar protectant, but this is very difficult to detect. M-LDS, Breen state VI. The "Comet" break is bold as are the other linear die flaws on the obverse. An attractive example of this popular "Redbook" variety.
Estimated Value $400-UP.
Ex Evan Kopald, Chris McCawley FPL 2006-Shawn Yancey.
