Hogarth, William (1697-1764) English painter and engraver. Famous for his extraordinary faculty for depicting the vices and follies of his time. Most of Hogarth's pictures and prints, which now enjoy a high repute for their technique, are preserved in British public or private collections. His powers of invention and combination were extraordinary; as a humorist and social satirist with the pencil he has had few peers.

From 1755-58 he produced four prints of the Election series. This example, "Canvassing for Votes", is plate #2 of this series, published Feb. 20, 1757. This print is probably state #6. Foxing about the borders. 22 x 17". Framed to an overall size of 30 x 26". Also includes a book on Hogarth prints: Sammlung Hogarth'scher Kupferstiche.
Estimated Value $200 - 250.
