Lot 51

1844/81 N-2 R2 Overdate 44 over 81 PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Lustrous light olive and steel with mellowing mint red covering 10-15% of both sides. The surfaces are satiny and the only marks are a tiny nick right of the lower right point of star 3 and a short horizontal streak of dark planchet impurity between the E in ONE and the adjacent leaf (as struck). EDS, die state a. The 44 over 81 feature (actually 1844 over an inverted 1844) is clear and the tiny points at the O in ONE and E in CENT are visible. The strike is soft on the coronet over LIB and at the opposing ribbon loop on the reverse, as always on this variety. A really nice example of this popular "Redbook" variety. Our grade is MS62, CC#4 in the Grellman census. Comes with a nice provenance. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer in BN at PCGS. Estimated Value $4,500 - UP
