Lot 477

1806 C-3 R6 Small 6 with Stems G6. Slightly sharper but there is a very shallow dusting of reddish scale in much of the field before the portrait and over more than half of the reverse. Technically you should call this "corrosion" but the layer is so thin it looks more like reddish brown toning. The rest of the planchet is medium chocolate brown and steel and both sides are rather glossy. There are some minor contact marks scattered over the obverse including a collection of faint scratches on the face and a few more hidden in the curls left of the shoulder. The date and legends are complete and strong except for minor weakness at the top of ERTY due to the obverse being slightly misaligned in that direction. EDS, Manley state 1.0, before the reverse die cracked. The finest known example of the variety grades net F15 and it brought $32,200 as lot #85 in our 1/24/2014 sale of the famous Missouri Cabinet collection of half cents. This is the plate coin for the variety in the first edition of the Cohen reference on half cents. A decent example of one of the rarest varieties in the half cent series, and it comes with an excellent provenance. Value $2,500 - UP
Ex Robert Batchelder-Paul Munson-Roger S. Cohen, Jr., Superior 2/2/1992:232-The Widok Collection (lot ticket included).
