World Map (Orbis Terrarum Tabula Recens Emendate et in Lucem Edita). Stoopendaal, Amsterdam, 1686, 14 x 18 1.8 inch (355 x 460 mm), colored. A beautiful, double-hemisphere world map from a folio Dutch Bible published by Hendrik and Jacob Keur. Surrounded by scenes from the Visscher-Berchem map of 1658 with astronomical diagrams in place of the north and south polar circles. Depicting CALIFORNIA AS AN ISLAND with a flat northern coast. A small island called Anian is located close to where Alaska is. Western Australia is shown, with only a hint of New Zealand. Classic scenes in the four corners depict the abduction of Persephone, Zeus being carried across the heavens in an eagle-drawn chariot, Poseidon commanding his entourage, and Demeter receiving the fruits of the Earth. Map has repairs at lower corners, affecting three figures; a few closed tears in hemispheres, and light toning. Tipped at top to a 19½ x 23 inch mat. A beautiful display map. Reference: Shirley #513.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,500.
