Monumental Late 16th or 17th Century Japanese Storage Jar with Brown Seal Hallmark at Base, Intricately Hand Painted of Mountain Village. The signature piece in our Asian Art Collection. A rare and monumental late 16th or 17th Japanese storage jar, impressive in its size and condition. Jar measures 24¼ x 13 x 13" (at its widest) with the mouth 8¾ x 8¾". The jar is hand painted and heavily glazed with remarkably intricate images of an entire mountain village. An explosion of glazes in greens, aqua, blues, taupe, sienna, cream, gold gilt and brown are all used to render mountains, lakes, waterfalls, clouds, rocks, every manner of flora including gnarled pines, fir, persimmon and ficus, with gorgeous tiled buildings in amongst all the landscape and villagers within. Brown seal hallmark at base and not a signed name. With no chips, cracks or repairs, truly excellent condition.
