Lot 417

US Marine Corps Major's Named Mameluke Sword & ca. 1904 Dress Uniform. This ensemble consists of a 37.5" USMC mameluke dress sword maker marked "F.L. Heiberger Washington, D.C." with an etched blade having "U.S. Marines" on one side and named "R.S. Kingsbury" on the other, this well worn with light rust and age tone, retaining only about 50% of the original nickel plating. The gilding on the guard is worn off and the genuine ivory grips have several cracks and two areas of crude repair. The original scabbard is complete but well worn with a few dents.

The dress pants also by Heiberger with a label named to Kingsbury and dated "Dec. 28, 04"; the dress tunic with a label "Rice & Duval Fifth Avenue New York" and also an area inside the pocket where a Heiberger label was cut out, probably when the NY firm tailored the tunic at a later date. The tunic's collar bullion somewhat detached and well worn neck area on the inside. All buttons, rank and sleeve bullion present and in nice condition. The pants with slight wear and sewn repairs, but good condition. The Marine Corps officer complement was small at this time and a little TLC and careful sewing will retsore this rare early uniform to excellent display status.
Estimated Value $1,250 - 1,500.

Realized $1,323
