Lot 4098

Jewish Coinage. The Bar Kokhba War, 132-135 CE. AR Denar (3.26 g) attributed to year 3 (134-135 CE). Palaeo-Hebrew inscription "Shim'on" within wreath topped by a medallion and terminating in ribbon ties. Reverse: Kithara (elaborate lyre with sound-box) with three strings; around, Palaeo-Hebrew inscription "For the Freedom of Jerusalem". Mild 130; H-1429. Some luster. Extremely Fine.

On the present specimen, the reverse well shows the late die state with numerous breaks. Also, the emperor's portrait (Hadrian?) from the earlier striking can be discerned on the kithara reverse in the 6 o'clock position.
Estimated Value $750 - 850.
Ex Goldberg Auction (20 II 05), lot 676.
