Jewish Coinage. Kings of Chalcis. Herod, 41-48 CE. AE 21 (half denomination). Diademed bust right of Herod of Chalcis. Reverse: Inscription within wreath. AJC II plate 29, 2 (this coin illustrated); TJC 363 (this coin illustrated); H-1253 (this coin illustrated). Extremely rare. About Fine/About Very Fine with clear portrait.

Herod of Chalcis, brother of Agrippa I, minted coins of three different values, of which this specimen is the middle or half denomination. The rarity of this coin is well shown by the fact that this particular example is photographed in various references. Herod was appointed as king of Chalcis by the Roman emperor Claudius. The extremely rare coins of Salome were issued later by her husband, Aristobulus, son of Herod of Chalcis.
