Lot 397

1856 N-1 R1 Italic 5. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. Lustrous medium brown and light olive with mellowed mint red on 25% of both sides. Sharply struck with just a few trivial marks. The notable ones are a speck of carbon at the dentils just right of the date, a couple very tiny ticks on the rim over stars 6 & 7, and a small nick on the rim at the bottom of the reverse. EDS but not quite the earliest. There are fine radial die flowlines in the fields but some of the early die lines over the N in UNITED are still visible. There are a couple shallow low spots inside the wreath, as nearly always seen on this variety. Graded MS63 by Noyes and tied for CC#5, his photo #33542. Our grade is MS63+, tied for CC#8 in the Grellman census. The attribution and Nancy & Bryan Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; none finer. (PCGS # 406195) Value $1,250 - UP
