Lot 3816

Russia. Alexander I, 1801-25. 1814 Set of three medals in Silver, Gilt Bronze and Bronze, 35mm, by T. Wyon Sr. For the Visit of Czar Alexander I and his sister Grand Duchess Catherine Pavlovna to England. Diakov-383.1 (R2 in AR); BHM-845, neither reference mentioning a gilt AE medal. Catherine, very much pleased with Wyon's portrait of the Czar on this medal, presented the engraver with a ring valued at 100 Guineas, a princely sum at the time! One can trace the progression of the reverse die break mentioned in BHM from the silver where it is just beginning, through the gilt AE to the AE where is it more pronounced. The bronze is VF-EF; the gilt bronze EF-AU and the silver medal is EF with handsome old toning. 3 pieces.
Estimated Value $400 - 600.

Realized $4,370
