Lot 381

1794 S-56 R3 PCGS graded XF40. The so-called "Office Boy Reverse" variety because of the rather haphazard placement of many of the letters in the legend. Glossy medium chocolate brown with hints of reddish chocolate brown toning in protected areas. The surfaces are smooth and show only trivial marks. The only notable marks are a small planchet flake in the field right of the Y in LIBERTY and a thin diagonal nick on the left side of the E in AMERICA. There are traces of microscopic loose crud on the obverse; a proper brushing should eliminate those when/if the coin is removed from the slab. LDS, Breen state III. The repunching on the A in STATES is gone and the die clashmarks are dull. The reverse is rotated 45 degrees clockwise. Perhaps that's why UNI are fully struck (many if not most of this variety have significant weakness in that area). A nice example of this popular variety. Our grade is VF25+. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 8 finer. PCGS #35630. Estimated Value $3,000 - UP
Ex Douglas F. Bird-Bob Willoughby Collection.
