Lot 3805

1838 $5 Classic Head. NGC graded AU-58. Well struck and choice. A highly lustrous satiny gem with a nuance of pale orange toning on both sides. The fields really impress us with their smooth texture. Moreover, unlike some that are struck from well-worn dies that imported a grainy, "orange peel" texture, this handsome 1838 stands tall. The Classic Head design dates to August 1834, when the amount of gold in the quarter eagle and half eagle were reduced. It was in use only thru 1838 on the half eagle, thru 1839 on the quarter eagle.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,300.

Realized $3,220
