1879 Hawaii Token. NGC graded Token EF-45 Brown. 2TE-8 12½ cents. Kahului and Wailuku R.R. Scarce popular early design. Kahului and Wailuku are two towns a couple of miles apart (today's airport and seaport is at Kahului). In the 19th century, Sugar was the big crop of the islands, with pineapple second. Thomas H. Hobron built a railroad to take his product from the sugar refinery over to the port for shipment to the United States and other world buyers, issuing these "bit" tokens to his workers. Two-bits = twenty-five cents in those days, a holdover from the Spanish monetary system that preceded ours.
Estimated Value $900 - 1,000.
