ICBM MX MissileWarhead, 1986, FLOWN Heatshield (1x.5") A metal letter opener with a clear lucite handle in which is inclosed the piece of flown heatshield, labeled: "AVCO Systems Division / Actual specimen of Ablative Heat Shield recovered from the First U.S. ICBM Low Angle Re-Entry Vehicle".
This system was flown on the W-87, a higher yield Mod 1 for use on the now cancelled single warhead Small ICBM (SICBM or Midgetman) that was begun in November 1987, but placed on hold in July 1988.The DOE began a life-extension program for W-87 in September 1987. The program was intended to extend the life of the warhead to 2020. The letter opener is in its original white box. Scarce.
