Lot 36

1787 New Jersey. . Maris 34-J Rarity-2. Fine-12 Struck over Connecticut copper. Deer head type. Glossy medium brown with some light olive toning in protected areas of the obverse. No notable defects. Excellent eye appeal for the grade. The date and obverse details are complete and strong but the reverse details are blunted a bit by the Connecticut undertype, which is obvious on both sides. In fact, the planchet is egg-shaped and offers an excellent example of how previously struck coppers were "recycled" during the early years of our coinage. Weight 148.8 grains.
Estimated Value $150 - 300.
Ex Tony Carlotto 4/89.

Realized $518
