Shafter, Major General William Rufus -- The Medal of Honor Recipient Requests Aid for a Spanish American War Widow (1835-1906) Union general in the Civil War, receiving the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Fair Oaks and a major general in the Spanish-American War. Second page of a Typed Letter Signed "Wm. R. Shafter," 2pp, undated, requesting assistance from a senator for a widow whose husband died during the attack on San Juan Hill and who was practically destitute trying to care for her family on fifty dollars a month. Shafter writes, "After giving the lives of two of her natural supporters to the service of her country, to say nothing of the services of her father during the war of the rebellion, it seems but a simple act of justice that she be given the position she seeks, and I hope, my dear Senator, that you will make an extra effort for her. I expect to be in Washington early in February with the remains of the late general Lawten, and I shall see Secretary Meiklejohn in person on behalf of Mrs. Mason…" The letter includes a humorous picture of a horse from the war titled "A Santiago Hero…The horse that Shafter mounted." Estimated Value $200 - 350
The George Snook Collection.
