Schley, Admiral Winfield S. - Quotation From His Report After Rescuing the Stranded Greeley Arctic Expedition (1839-1911) Rear admiral in the U.S. Navy; commander of the relief expedition for the stranded Greeley Arctic expedition. Autograph Quotation Signed "W.S. Schlley/Commander U.S.N./ Cmdy. Greely Relief Ex. 1884", being a descriptive passage of the scene that was included in Schley's official report. Adolphus Greely was a member of the U.S. Army's Signal Corps. He led an expedition to Ellesmere Island, which is northwest of Greenland, to study its weather and winter conditions. Attempts to relieve the expedition in 1882 and 1883 failed and the men started to die from disease and starvation. When Commander Schley reached the survivors on June 23, 1884, there were only six left of the 25 who started out, including Greeley. Schley was later the hero of the Battle of Santiago de Cuba in the Spanish American War. Very fine. Estimated Value $200 - 400
The George Snook Collection.
