Lucius Verus. Æ 33mm Medallion, AD 161-169, from Magydus in Pamphylia. AVT K AIΛ AVPH OVHPOC, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Lucius Verus right. Reverse : MA[Γ]V-ΔEΩN, Zeus seated right, holding scepter; in exergue, K. SNG BN -; SNG von Aulock 8509 (same dies); McClean 8819, pl. 315, 5 (same dies). Extremely rare - one of only seven known specimens, and certainly one of if not the finest known. Attractive green patina with light earthen highlights. Extremely Fine.

The online database of RPC IV records just five specimens of this coin, all but one in museum collections: the McClean specimen currently in the Fitzwilliam; the Mossop specimen, also in the Fitzwilliam; the Newell specimen in the ANS; one specimen in Vienna; and the von Aulock specimen, current disposition unknown. One further specimen has appeared recently at auction (see Coin Galleries, 28 April 2010, 268). Our coin is far superior to the McClean, von Aulock, and Coin Galleries specimens; illustrations of the ANS, Mossop, and Vienna specimens are not currently available for purposes of comparison.
Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,000.

Realized $1,586
