Farragut, David Glasgow--First U.S. Navy Rear Admiral, Vice Admiral, and Admiral (1801-1870) U.S. naval officer. He commanded the Union blockade of Southern ports, helped capture the Confederate city of New Orleans, and provided support for Ulysses S. Grant; he is famous for his order as he entered Mobile Bay, Alabama on Aug. 5, 1864: "Damn the torpedoes, Full speed ahead." Autograph Letter Signed "D.G. Farragut," 2pp, 10½x8½", U.S. Ship Decatur, Rio de Janeiro, Dec. 20, 1842. To Comdr. Charles Morris, Commd'g N.W. Squadron, Coast of Brazil. A personal letter including references to British, French, and Portuguese ships nearby. Thin tape strip down left margin, barely touching signature on verso. Over his long career, Farragut fought the British, slave traders, West Indian pirates, Mexicans, and the Confederacy. Estimated Value $400 - 600
