1796 S-114 R5- Draped Bust VG8. A few points sharper but covered with very fine roughness under a glossy dark chocolate and steel patina with traces of reddish chocolate toning on both sides. The only mark of any consequence is a small pit under the right foot of N in ONE. The date and legends are bold. MDS, Breen state II, with a very strong die crack through the tops of TY to the dentils on either side, and the section over this crack has shifted outward slightly into a retained cud. This is the plate coin used in Dr. Sheldon's Early American Cents. Comes with an impressive provenance. Estimate Value $1,500 - UP
