Lot 3394

St. Louis, MO. Bank of Missouri. $3.00 April 1, 1820. PCGS graded Fine 12. The Bank of Missouri was established in 1819, and folded after only two years in business. It was founded by a group of prominent early Missouri businessmen, including Auguste Chouteau, pioneer fur trader, co-founder of St. Louis, and partner of John Jacob Astor. Thomas Hart Benton, later a U.S. Senator (also famous for nearly killing President Andrew Jackson in a duel), was a director and stockholder--his losses in this venture led to his later hatred of banks and mistrust of paper money in general. This extremely rare note is one of only a handful known, and was last sold in the NASCA sale of the T. James Clarke Collection in 1978.
Estimated Value $400 - 600.

Realized $1,208
