Lot 3292

Great Britain. Proof Halfpenny, 1729. Peck-832. George II. Laureate cuirassed young bust of King, left. Reverse: Britannia. Date below. Deep chocolate surfaces with well struck design characterise this specimen. Peck describes this, the first Halfpenny of the reign, as 'rare'. Peck also points out that although George II became King on 11 June 1727 the coining of copper was only resumed under a warrant dated 21 July 1729 and signed by Queen Caroline in the King's absence. The Proof Halfpenny of 1729 can be distinguished from the currency pieces in that the globe touches the exergue line. The spray held by Britannia contains two distinct berries and the crosses on the shield are fimbriated. Lightly cleaned. Proof.
Estimated Value $900 - 1,100.

Realized $978
