The name of Harun al-Rashid conjures up visions of the fabled Orient. A son of a Yemeni slave, Harun reigned for nearly a quarter of a century -- becoming the most celebrated caliph of the Abbasid dynasty. Known in the West as a patron of the Arts, as a ruler he could with equal ease deal ruthlessly with the religious and social revolts which afflicted his far-flung kingdom, and even more ruthlessly with political rivals. By protecting and favoring intellectuals, Harun made Baghdad a brilliant center of culture and learning. It is from this aspect that he is still remembered today as a pivotal figure in the Arabian tales of a "Thousand and One Nights."
Estimated Value $150 - 200.
