Lot 3219

Great Britain. Crown, ND. S.2753. Charles I, 1625-1649. Tower mint. Group 1a. Mint mark, lis. King, crowned, on horseback, with armour and sword above shoulder. The horse richly caparisoned with plume over its head and rear. Reverse:Long cross fourchee over square garnished shield. The reverse legend reads: CHRISTO AUSPICE REGNO (I reign under the auspices of Christ) and, bearing in mind this coin was struck in the first year or so of Charles' reign, it bears testimony to his unswerving belief in the 'Divine Right of Kings'. It could also have been a way of throwing down a psychological gauntlet to Parliament! For a crudely made hammered crown this is superb. Pleasingly toned and nicely round, the coin has sharper detail (especially on the portrait of King Charles and on the reverse shield) than the Slaney specimen (lot 39) which fetched over £4000 (over $7000) in 2003. NGC graded EF-40.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000.

Realized $3,680
