Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Sale 25

Lot 3172

Czechoslovakia. Lot of Four Pieces. Two are silver bracteates (one was minted under Premysl II, 1253-1278), plus two galvanos, or casts, of another bracteate which incorporated Hebrew letters in the inscription. Lot of 4 items, two of which are actual coins. Condition is Very Fine or better.

Our numismatic term "bracteate" comes from the Latin word "bractea," meaning a thin plate of metal. The cataloguer remembers that years ago in order to sell these now more sought-after issues of the medieval period, a well-known dealer on the East Coast advertised them as "the coins that float in water"; they actually do float!
Estimated Value $200 - 300.

Realized $546
