Lot 315

1842 N-5 R3 Large Date. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. Highly lustrous bluish steel brown with mellowing mint red covering at least 20% of the planchet, mostly on the reverse. A beautiful cent, void of any spots, stains, or notable contact marks. A thin diagonal planchet chip under star 7 (as struck) and a microscopic horizontal tick close over the 4 in the date are the best identifying marks, and they are wholly insignificant. EDS, die state a. The repunching in the dentils under the left side of the 4 is clear and the fine die lines from the dentils at star 12 are sharp. Our grade is MS65, CC#2 in the Grellman census behind a marginally finer example. PCGS population 1; none finer in RB for the variety. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label (PCGS # 403938) .
Estimated Value $3,000-UP.
Ex Heritage 4/29/2009:1063-Chris McCawley 1/2010-William R. Eckberg.
