Lot 3128

Argolis, Epidauros, c. 250-245 BC. AR Drachm (4.77g). Laureate head of Apollo Maleatas to right, his hair falling over the nape of his neck. Reverse: Bearded Asklepios seated to left on stool, holding a long scepter in his left hand and extending his right over the head of a serpent that coils to left before him; under the throne, hound lying to right; below the seat, OE. BCD 1240 (this coin) ; BMC 7; Jameson 2107; SNG Lockett 2508 (all same dies). Requier 57 (this coin). Well struck and beautifully toned, probably the finest Epidauros drachm known. Superb Extremely Fine.

This is a remarkably well preserved example. Normally, the drachms of Argolis in general and Epidauros in particular, are at least somewhat worn, marred with problems or corroded. This example is exceptional.
Estimated Value $40,000 - 50,000.
