Lot 3096

Kingdom of Lydia. Time of Alyattes to Kroisos, c. 600-560 BC. Electrum Trite (or Third Stater; 4.73 g). Lion's head right with open jaw; on nose, sun with multiple rays (or globular wart). Reverse: Irregular incuse square divided. Rosen 653; SNG Kayhan 1013; Dewing 2421; Weidauer Ser. XVI. Very well delineated for issue. Extremely Fine.

While many catalogues suggest two incuse punches were employed for the reverse of this historical coin type, on the present specimen there can be seen two die-breaks which go across the division of the incuses. This gives support to the theory of one punch, or possibly of one rectangular die holding two smaller square incuses.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,500.

Realized $2,220
